Country Details

The Dominican Republic has become the Caribbean's largest tourist destination.  It has the second largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region.  Santo Domingo, its capital, prides itself in being the first European city in the New World.  Its major industries are ferronickel, gold, silver, sugar, coffee and tobacco.  The Dominican Peso (DOP) is the official currency of the country.

Important things to know when renting a property in Dominican Republic:

Common Expat Areas - The areas where affordable, desirable rentals are most likely to be located within Santo Domingo are:  Arroyo Hondo, Los Rios, Los Prados, Las Praderas, Urb. Fernandez, Julieta Morales, Quiqueya, El Millon, Mirador Norte, La Julia, Ciudad Universitaria, Gazcue, Miramar, Costa Azul.

  • All landlords require a guarantor.  If the company doesn’t serve as the guarantor, the landlord may request some rent up front.  In case the transferring corporation is unable to guarantee the lease, they may also be asked to provide an employment letter indicating the position, monthly allowance and years the employee has been working at the company.  It is up to the landlord to accept this letter in lieu of a guarantor.
  • Most landlords agree to negotiate the rent in USD.
  • It is important to note that there are properties/buildings that do not have a 24/7 electrical plant as back up for when power is lost.  We recommend that all Expat housing includes this option which may affect the rental prices.

Utilities are not usually included as part of the rent. The average monthly cost will depend on the size of the family and usage.  The tenant is responsible for connecting and paying for telephone, cable and internet.  Personal information will be needed along with a Dominican ID.

Day Care/Pre-school: Day Care Centers and Pre-schools operate either all year round or during the school calendar in which the school operates. Cost will vary depending if care is full-time or part-time.

Elementary School: Kindergarten (5-6 Years old), 1st (6-7), 2nd (7-8), 3rd (8-9), 4th (9-10) and 5th (10-11)

Middle School: 6th (11-12), 7th (12-13), 8th (13-14)

High School: 9th (14-15), 10th (15-16), 11th (16-17), 12th (17-18)


Registering your Child/ren
To be considered for admissions in most private international schools in Dominican Republic, all applicants are generally required to comply with the following process and documentation:

  1. Child’s birth certificate
  2. Medical certificate
  3. Two recent pictures (2x2)
  4. Grades of previous school (if applicable).

Non-Spanish records need to be officially translated and legalized by the Dominican Consulate located in the place of precedence. If records are in Spanish, they only need to be legalized by the Dominican Consulate located in the place of precedence.  The legalized records must then be taken to the Validation Department of Education Ministry (Ministerio de Educación – ME) in the Dominican Republic.

Dominican ID – The Dominican ID card, known as the Cedula, is the national identification number.  It is issued by the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic which is used to identify each individual.  In the Dominican Republic this document is issued to both foreigners and Dominican citizens who are of legal age (18 years old). Having a valid Dominican ID is mandatory for all the residents of the country. This document allows foreigners and nationals to open bank accounts, request driver licenses and work, among other things.

Driver License – If you reside in the Dominican Republic for more than three months, you must apply to obtain a driver’s license.  The first step to request a driver’s license is obtaining the Dominican ID (Cedula).  Once you have this document you will be ready to request a driver’s license through the Ministry of Public Works and Communications.  Requirements are as follows:

  • Diplomatic certificate from the consulate of the country where the driver’s license was issued which must specify the validity of the license.  We recommend that you obtain this certificate before you move to DR.
  • Valid residence card
  • Valid Dominican ID

If the requirements mentioned above are fulfilled and you hold a foreign driver’s license, you will be exempt of taking a written and driving exam.

Once all the above documents are together, you must schedule a medical exam with the Ministry of Public Work and Communications as well as pay for the corresponding taxes for the issuance of the Dominican driver’s license. 

If the applicant does not have a valid foreign driver’s license, then he/she must complete the entire process mentioned above in addition to taking the written and driving exam.
