Country Details

Guatemala is located in Central America, between Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras; with an area of 108,000 km2 and a population of approximately 15 million people. Guatemala is known as “The Country of Eternal Spring” for its privileged weather year around. The local currency is the “Quetzal” and the main export products are coffee and cardamom. With 33 volcanoes, 23 lakes, and breathtaking Mayan ruins, Guatemala is one of the main tourist attractions in Latin America. 

Important things to know when renting a property in Guatemala:

Common expat areas are Zona 14, Zona 15, Cayalá, San Isidro, Carretera a El Salvador, Las Luces, and Bosques de las Luces. 
Most leases are signed for 1 or 2 years. A local guarantor is needed, preferably a multinational company. All leases are drafted by lawyers and their fee is paid by the landlord. The realtor´s commission is paid by the landlord and is usually 1 month’s rent.

Utilities are paid separately from the rent. Some examples include electricity, cable, internet, telephone, water, maintenance, gardening fees, and gas. 

The most common school for expat children are Colegio Americano, Colegio Maya, Colegio Interamericano, Colegio Aleman, and Colegio Monarch.

Driver License - A local driver´s license needs to be obtained if the expat will stay in the country for over 6 months.
